Coaching skills for leaders

Description

In today’s organizations, we often hear that people in the roles of managers, Scrum Masters and team leaders need to be coaches for the people around them. In many of these situations, the term ‘coaching’ is being used without taking proper time to understand what it is, what it isn’t, what it can offer and how we can begin practicing our coaching skills.

In this unique, 3-day experiential hands-on course, we explore where coaching fits into the landscape of management, mentoring, facilitation, counseling and simply having a productive dialogue. After taking this course, participants will understand when and how coaching is appropriate as well as having identified and begun practicing the universal communication skills integral to coaching.

Objectives

  • Demystifying ‘what coaching is and isn’t’
  • Introducing participants to the set of core coaching competencies defined by the International Coach Federation (ICF)
  • Introducing the coaching stance and common coaching traps
  • Practicing Active Listening
  • Practicing asking Powerful Questions
  • Practicing using a coaching framework to guide a complete coaching session or process

Course content

The course includes a mix of presentations, open conversations about key coaching concepts, personal reflection time as well as hands-on practice of the concepts in pairs and small groups. Participants will practice their coaching skills as well as practice giving and receiving feedback.  

The course is taught in a small informal setting with a maximum number of twelve participants. The content is covered in English, and we encourage participants to team up and practice in their language of choice (English or French).  

The course runs over two consecutive days followed by a final day two weeks later. During these two weeks, participants can experiment and practise the coaching skills they learned in the course.

What you will learn

In this course, you will learn when to use coaching as well as when not to. You will learn to recognize the most common traps that prevent you from taking the coaching stance from where coaching can happen. You will also learn how to listen ‘actively’ and ask ‘powerful’ questions as well as leave the course with an actionable personal development plan for what skills you need to practise and how.
